Deep hole drilling CNC machines are designed to cut or bore very deep holes into metal workpieces with high precision, tight diameter control, straightness, and fine surface finish. A deep hole is defined by its depth-to-diameter ratio, and typically holes with a ratio greater than 10:1 are considered deep holes.
Deep hole drilling can be completed on a wide range of materials, including aluminum and super-alloys. The process applies to over 150 applications across several industries and was originally designed to fulfill the need for straighter, more accurate gun barrels. How It Works:
Deep hole drilling works by using special tools and setups to deliver high pressure coolant, evacuate chips cleanly, and achieve high depth-to-diameter holes while allowing manufacturers to meet tight tolerances, achieve production accuracy requirements, and attain repeatable output parameters.
Deep hole drilling is generally performed on dedicated deep hole drilling machines, which are manufactured and assembled to optimize the processes for straightness and efficiency. Advancements in technology allow CNC machining centers equipped with high pressure CTS (coolant through-spindle) to be capable of gun drilling up to a limited depth-to-diameter ratio.
