Tongtai has recently come out with a brand new Ultrasonic iVU-5 Assisted Machining Center. This rotary-type machining center also operates as a dual task vertical machining center. It is combined with rotary ultrasonic assisted machining for maximum versatility.

Tongtai Ultrasonic iVU-5 Features
The following applications are typical for this machine and include microhole drilling and machining of: glass, sapphire, silicon carbide, quartz, ceramic, hardened steel, high nickel alloys, and non-ferrous materials. As long as the material is softer than the cutting tool, it can be ultrasonic-assisted.
The way rotary ultrasonic machining works is it combines high-speed spindle rotation with vertical vibration of the cutting tool at high frequency. The tool, enforced with diamond, contacts the material at high speed which reduces cutting force as well as produces ultra-fine finishes. This method improves cutting efficiency and is 3 – 5 times faster than previous machines.

More About Ultrasonic Operation
The Tongtai iVU-5 comes standard with a programmed frequency search and lock via M-codes. It features an auto tuning range from 15-45 kHz, and amplitude range is 1 – 10 microns. A wide range of standard features promote effective ultrasonic machining and longevity.
There are two axis options for the machinery; 3-axis and 5-axis. Each option comes with a few different features. The 3-axis machine comes with Siemens 828D control and 10.4” TFT with ShopMill and Advanced Surface. The 5-axis version is a little different, featuring Siemens 840D control and 17” IPC plus the Sinumerik MDynamics Technology package for 5-axis milling, and ShopMill.
