The 31st edition of this bi-annual show ran from Sept. 12-17 in Chicago. It featured the highest number of exhibiting companies in the showโs history, with 2,407 companies and 115,612 registrants.
Absolute Machine Tools launched many new models at the show, including the Tongtai iVU-5 Rotary-Type Ultrasonic Assisted Machining Center. This machine can be used for microhole drilling and machining of glass, sapphire, silicon carbide, quartz, ceramic, hardened steel, high nickel alloys, and non-ferrous materials. Rotary Ultrasonic Machining combines high-speed spindle rotation with high-frequency vertical vibration of the cutting tool.
The Tongtai iVU-5 uses a diamond tool that impacts the material with high contact speed, reducing cutting force and producing ultra-fine finishes while improving cutting efficiency 3-5 times faster than conventional machining. For certain EDM applications, Ultrasonic machining may be a better solution as it can greatly reduce cycle time. In a test cut using Tungsten Carbide, the iVU-5 Ultrasonic machine cut a 4mm x 60mm x 3mm groove 4 times faster than a wire EDM. Ultra fine finishing is also an advantage with ultrasonic machining as it can create a mirror image without polishing.
