Greg Knight Receives Gold Micrometer Award for 40 Years of Service
Absolute Machine Tools is proud to congratulate our own Greg Knight on receiving the Precision Machined Products Association’s Gold Micrometer Award!
The award recognizes individuals who have dedicated 40 years of service to the Precision Machined Products Industry. Each year, a committee reviews applicants from member companies based on established criteria to choose the award recipients. Knight was among the 2017 recipients who were awarded a gold-plated, engraved, working micrometer in acknowledgement of 4 decades of service.
About Greg Knight
Knight is Absolute Machine Tools’ vice president of production turning products, a position that is well-deserved after years of service in this industry. Manufacturing management has been Knight’s career for more than 30 years, and his journey began with working in the family screw machine business.
“My dad was an amazing machinist, but being the eldest son, the death of his father forced him to go to work (at 12) to support the family,” Knight said. “So his formal education was cut short, and it was a priority for him to see me graduate from college. Now, my college majors were all social sciences — philosophy, psychology, sociology. I never took an engineering or business course in my life. Of course, engineering and running businesses is all I’ve done since college.
“One day soon out of school and working at the family screw machine business, I saw my father grind a tool, put the tool in the Brownie, measure the part, go back and regrind, cut, measure, etc. When I asked him what he was doing, he explained to me that the print called out diameters but didn’t say what angle connected the two dimensions. I told him that if he gave me a little time, I could figure out the proper angle. He didn’t really believe me, but let me ‘play with the calculator’. Now I knew that there was a Machinist’s Handbook hidden somewhere on the shelves (no sine functions on the calculator back then). I found the trig tables and computed the angle.
“My dad was quite skeptical, but as my numbers were close to his guesses, he tried it out. And the dimension came in perfectly. For the next week, he told everyone that came through the shop door that all that investment in college had paid off. I never did have the heart to tell him that I learned that in 11th grade in high school.”
After working as general manager then becoming an owner of a screw machine job shop for 20 years, Knight joined AMT Machine Systems as a manager and became Vice President for 15 years. He helped form Advanced Machinery Solutions to be the North American distributors for LICO Machinery.
When Absolute Machine Tools acquired Advanced Machinery Solutions in February 2017, Knight joined our team and continues to offer the highest level of service to the manufacturing industry.
