Johnford SHV & HN Series – High Speed Hi-Net Vertical Machining Centers for Molds & Dies

The Johnford SHV Series high speed vertical machining centers are purpose-engineered machines designed specifically for Hi-Net and near net-shape manufacturing in mold and die, tooling, and precision component production. Every machine in the SHV and HN lineup is built to machine parts closer to final geometry directly from the VMC, significantly reducing polishing, hand finishing, and secondary operations while maintaining high accuracy and ultra-fine surface finishes.

All Johnford SHV and HN models share the same Hi-Net machining objective; the difference lies in structural construction, allowing manufacturers to select the platform best suited to their cutting dynamics. SHV models, including the SHV-1000, utilize a rigid universal headstock construction rather than a traditional C-frame, delivering superior spindle support, balanced force distribution, and exceptional surface finish consistency during high-speed finishing and complex 3D contour machining.

HN models — the SV-33HN, SV-41HN, and SV-48HN — employ a heavy-duty C-frame vertical machining center design with box-way guidance, providing outstanding rigidity and stability for near net-shape roughing and finishing of mold cavities, cores, and tooling. Both platforms are competitively priced and purpose-built for mold and die machining, making them a better technical and economic choice than general-purpose vertical machining centers adapted for this work.

Key Features

  • Purpose-built Hi-Net / near net-shape machining architecture, optimized for mold and die applications rather than general-purpose VMC use.
  • Universal headstock construction on SHV models, improving force balance, spindle support, and surface finish consistency in complex finishing operations.
  • Heavy-duty C-frame construction on HN models, utilizing box ways on all axes for maximum rigidity during near net-shape roughing and finishing.
  • Weiss integral HSK-63A spindles up to 24,000 RPM, engineered for high-speed finishing, graphite machining, and tight-tolerance work.
  • Large-diameter, pre-tensioned ballscrews with direct-coupled servo motors for high positioning accuracy and long service life.
  • Fanuc high-speed CNC controls with advanced look-ahead and contour control functions for smooth, accurate 3D toolpath execution.
  • Expandable productivity options, including pallet changers, high-pressure through-spindle coolant, probing systems, linear scales, and graphite machining packages.

Benefits for Metal Cutting Manufacturers

Johnford SHV Series machines deliver tangible process advantages for mold and die shops and precision manufacturers focused on accuracy, surface quality, and throughput:

  • Hi-Net and near net-shape machining capability that reduces downstream polishing and bench work while improving overall process efficiency.
  • Cycle time reduction and long-term reliability, allowing manufacturers to deliver consistent, high-quality parts to end customers while maximizing spindle uptime.
  • Exceptional stability and rigidity derived from application-specific structural designs that maintain cutting accuracy during aggressive roughing and high-speed finishing.
  • High accuracy and repeatability enabled by large-diameter, pre-tensioned ballscrews and direct-coupled servo motors that preserve positional integrity over long machining cycles.
  • Ultra-fine surface finishes critical for mold cavities and precision tooling, supported by vibration-damping Meehanite cast iron construction and high-performance spindle systems.

Ideal Cutting Applications

  • Hi-Net and near net-shape mold and die machining where surface finish, stability, and repeatability are critical
  • Injection mold cavities, cores, and inserts requiring minimal post-machining finishing
  • Graphite electrode machining for EDM mold and die processes
  • Precision tooling and fixtures for aerospace and medical manufacturing
  • High-accuracy aluminum and hardened steel components
