Heavy-Duty Engineering for Maximum Performance

As machine size and application complexity increase, Johnford’s SH series integrates advanced technologies to boost productivity, including full 5-face and 5-axis machining options. To support the larger Y-axis travel and the mass of advanced heads, the bridge, columns, and headstock castings are significantly reinforced over smaller models. The SH series maintains Johnford’s proven design philosophy while adding enhancements for even greater structural rigidity, all without compromising the company’s hallmark ergonomics and enclosure design.

Precision Design for Superior Accuracy

The SH series features a stationary ballscrew with rotating ball nut in the X-axis to reduce vibration and improve accuracy under heavy table loads. The X-axis includes heavy-duty, widely spaced precision-ground box ways with Turcite-B coatings and a 63 mm pre-tensioned ballscrew, with optional roller-type linear guideways for even higher performance. The Y-axis provides 650 mm (25.6″) between box ways and a 63 mm pre-tensioned ballscrew to minimize thermal growth. The ram-type Z-axis box structure ensures optimum cutting efficiency even when fully extended, supported by a 962 mm (37.9″) hydraulic counterbalance for smooth head positioning.

Powerful Spindle System

All Johnford SH models feature a robust 26 kW spindle motor paired with a 2-speed ZF gearbox delivering up to 6000 RPM as standard on BT-50 configurations. A built-in chiller system ensures thermal stability during demanding cuts, while the high-performance cutting head produces an impressive 662 Nm (488 lb.-ft.) of torque at only 375 RPM for maximum metal removal capability.
