70″ Extended Y-Axis Travel
Johnford’s SH CNC bridge mill series offers an extended Y-axis travel of 1778mm or 70″. The SH series is designed to deliver maximum performance in minimum space with a massive heavy single-piece Meehanite structure to absorb the stresses of heavy machining with deflection. These machines have zero overhang in X, Y, and Z axes.

The X-axis is built with heavy-duty widely spaced box ways that are precision ground and Turcite-B coated and includes a ∅63mm pretensioned ballscrew. Optional roller-type linear guideways are also available in X. The Y-axis includes 650mm (25.6″) distance between box ways, and a ∅63mm pretensioned ballscrew to eliminate thermal growth. Its Z-axis is built with a ram-type box structure for maximum performance and optimum cutting efficiency even when fully extended. Its milling head is held by 962mm (37.9″) hydraulic counterbalance in the saddle for smooth positioning.
The 26kW spindle motor includes a 2-speed ZF gearbox with 6000 RPM, which is standard on all Johnford BT-50 machines. A built-in chiller system is also included to maintain performance under loading. And finally, the high-performance cutting head has 662Nm (488 lb./ft.) of torque which is achieved at only 375 RPM.
